The Viking Circle

The Viking Circle is a trademark1 of The Viking Circle Ltd. The company's activity is based on the ideas of Haukur Halldórsson, artist, and Sverrir Örn Sigurjónsson, business administrator, on how to operate a business based on old Northern European culture. Old Nordic stories, objects of art and other artifacts found in Iceland and other countries make up the ideology behind this business idea. Two decades of studies and travels through many European countries and North America to gain knowledge of the art and history of their nations, have made it clear that great value lies in their joint culture.

People's potential interest in this culture was examined, with the conclusion that the most promising way would be to take advantage of the visual presentation in relation to historical knowledge in Nordic mythology. Nordic mythology is actually Northern European religious studies or theology. Without criticizing other ancient written records, we use the world's genesis as traced in the prose Edda, or Snorra-Edda, as our main source material on how our ancestors explained life and the elements of nature. Our conclusion was that to finance the project, a suitable setting needed to be created in order to attract interested guests.

The art and educational centre specializing in the above-mentioned material is called The Viking Circle and is located in Straumur at Straumsvík, Hafnarfjördur (ca. 35 km. from Keflavík Airport in the direction towards Reykjavík). Various presentations and introductions on old Nordic culture and art are given there, in connection with the company's activities. The centre houses other operation as well, such as designing and production department.

Theme Parks

A theme park must be constructed, enabling guests to see and participate in the world they pay a visit to. Special surroundings would attract people; something one would not find anywhere else.

Creation of a suitable scene has been in development for years together now. This scene has been named Sögugardurinn, or the Story Park, and includes ideas of surroundings, people, and artifacts related to our business idea.

Our emphasis is on entertainment and enlightenment linked to each environment in question. In relation to each theme, products would later be designed and produced, with appropriate service as well.
Illustrations and artifacts have already been designed to find out about people's interest and reaction.

The Northern Pole Enclosure (Heimskautsgerði) is being built in Raufarhöfn2. It's based on the interplay of light and shadows during the different seasons of the year, and the wights related to the seasons. The wights in this case are the dwarves; they are mentioned in the first half of Völuspá and there are 72 of them. A creation of each dwarf along with its individual characteristics has been in progress for some time, and designing of their clothes and accessories is in its early stage.

Publishing

Illustrated books with a description of the principal characters of the Nordic pantheon are well in progress, and will be published in the main touristic languages in Iceland. The nine worlds of the Norse pantheon will be covered in three books. The nine worlds are: Asgard (world of gods), Midgard (world of men), Elven World, World of Dwarves, Hel (realm of calmness, where those who die of old age and diseases go), Iotunheim (world of giants), Muspelheim (realm of fire), Niflheim (realm of ice), and World of Dark Elves.

The first book of the three is now available in Icelandic, English, and Danish. It covers the gods (aesir), elves, and men.

A book on magical runes and Icelandic farm markings is available as well. It will only be available in Icelandic for now, but will possibly be translated into English later on.

Ornamented Viking fortune for each day, based on old Nordic believes and symbols, are available as well. They can be printed out in Icelandic, English, Danish, German, and Russian. Some marketing of the Viking fortune has already been done, with good results.

Pictures of the 72 dwarves of Völuspá are available as well. The pictures will be printed with quality printing, with information on their roles and importance. The dwarves rule Earth’s vegetation and are thus a part of the basis for all life on here on earth.

Visual arts and history

All our visual art is done by the best digital graphics technique available and by high quality pigment printing, which is the best printing for art available today and used by highly respected art museums. Printing can be done on either reinforced cotton canvas or specially selected paper, depending on which works better for each case.

Pictures and series of pictures based on stories from Snorra-Edda are available now. Among those is a series based on Thrymskvida, depicting Loki and Thor’s journey to Iotunheim (world of the giants) to retrieve Thor’s hammer.

It's worth mentioning that a number of other works is available for printing.

Production of the magical runes known in Iceland is completed. The runes are displayed in an artistic format and intended for printing with the same technique as the art work mentioned above.

Next steps for the company’s activities

The Viking Circle has now reached a certain milestone, with the introduction of the company's operation being the next step. Marketing and growth has to be well looked to.

The company's present housing is splendid; a workplace where exhibitions can be put up and groups of visitors, who are interested in our anchestors culture, can be recieved. The facilities provide an opportunity for meetings and the education or enlightenment of students and adults, and a gallery as well.

It is important to kindle people's interest in the great treasure the old Nordic culture.

This is only a brief introduction of what the Viking Circle engages in, but it's clear that the projects are both big and diverse, both on Icelandic and European scale.
